Liturgical Movement: A Photo Essay

by Sister Arleen Bourquin, SFP

About three years ago, Mary Yaney and I assumed responsibility for the Liturgical Dancers at St. Francis of Assisi Parish in Centerville Ohio.  Mary has a background in classical dance and my background in spirituality and spiritual direction.  Although our parish had included liturgical dance in special liturgies, the young women who had participated were leaving home for college.  We used our parish bulletin to invite young people to join a new group of dancers.  We began with six girls ages eight to twelve.  Since that initial invitation, the group has grown to sixteen and three adult women. Although the girls would love to dance every Sunday, we limit ourselves to the major feasts, such as Christmas, Easter, Pentecost, Corpus Christi, and other special occasions.  The girls participate in processions and dance the Gloria and Our Father.

The following are pictures from some of the dances we have created.
